It's never too early to think about summer vacation

Updated: Mar 22, 2018

Ok, so today is the first day of spring. Here in New England we are planning for the fourth Nor'easter in a month! All this snow and wind has got us thinking about SUMMER.

It is often hard for us to get away in the summer with our busy charter schedule, and who really wants to leave Newport in the summer? Sometimes it is nice to put life on hold for the afternoon and get across the two bridges, off the island, and away on an adventure.

We love to head for historic Mystic Connecticut. It is only one hour from Newport, Two hours from Boston and three hours from New York City.

Our first stop is always for a snack, depending if we arrive for breakfast or lunch, we usually go to either Lis Bake Shop, she has awesome pastries and a few lunchy items. Or we go to Engine Room they serve brunch, lunch and dinner. It's got a southern- meets New England kind of vibe and we love it. Interesting burgers, homemade french onion dip, mac and cheese, farm to table without being pretentious. Try the smoked chicken wings.

Once we fill up our bellies we like to explore Mystic Seaport it is a living museum of classic boats, colonial history, whaling exhibits, a beautiful collection of maritime art, and reenactment of a historical working seaport. Great for kids and adults, it's cool it you are not super into history because it is fun just to walk around and see the boats on the waterfront and the working shipyard. You can try your hand at rowing one of the many row boats, or go for a quick sail, or cruise aboard their steamboat Sabino, but we think the true Seaport experience lies in chartering one of their historic boats and going for a private cruise down the Mystic River.

Mystic Yacht has three boats to choose from, each boat is private and you can have six or fewer guests. You can start with a 1hr45min boat cruise or even go out for a half day! My favorite part is you can stop for a swim on the half day cruise, and all boat tours are BYOB! The river is beautiful and it is amazing to see the homes and boats along the river. Check out Mystic Yacht Charter to see the boats they offer. Our personal favorite is the sunset cruise which we think is the best way to end a super fun day, don't forget the Champagne.
